Description: Photograph of "Farm and Mill" painted by Herschel Levit in 1941. The painting is located in the post office in Louisville, Ohio in Stark County. Photographed by Connie Girard in 1988. The photo is from the Ohio Post Office Artwork Collection, AV 48. The collection represents thirty murals or plaster reliefs installed in twenty-five Ohio post offices between 1937 and 1943. In 1988, Connie Girard photographed the artwork. Photos were published in the article “Not By Bread Alone, Post Office Art of the New Deal.” Timeline. June-July 1989, p. 2-19 by Gerald Markowitz and Marlene Park. In 1932, when Franklin Delano Roosevelt was elected President he promised Americans a "New Deal" and created public works programs to provide jobs for the millions of unemployed people, including artists. Ten thousand unknown and established artists were commissioned by the government to create murals, paintings, photographs, posters, prints and sculpture. The goal was not only to employ artists, but also to bring fine art into the daily lives of all people. The Public Works of Art Project (PWAP) was funded for six months in 1933 – 1934. The PWAP was succeeded by the Treasury Department’s Section of Painting and Sculpture. Organized in 1934 the Section of Painting and Sculpture operated until 1943. Under the auspices of this organization sixty-six new Ohio post offices received artwork. The majority of the post offices were located in small towns. Post offices were chosen as a location for artwork because, particularly in small towns, they were centers of community activity. Most of the painted murals or murals in plaster relief created are realistic images reflecting the history, common activities or major industries of the communities in which the post offices are located. Description: The Bicentennial barn-painting program was an inexpensive, grassroots marketing campaign that painted the official logo of the Ohio Bicentennial on a highly visible historic barn in each of Ohio's 88 counties. Over 2,000 farmers and landowners submitted their barn descriptions to the committee for consideration. Beginning in 1998, artist Scott Hagan spent five years painting the logos, tailored to every barn's unique character. Typically, the barn owners hosted a celebration at the completion of their barn painting. Description: Dated October 31, 1936, this photograph shows a new concrete bridge at an unidentified location in Cairo, Ohio, in Stark County. This photograph is one of the many visual materials collected for use in the Ohio Guide. In 1935, President Franklin D. Roosevelt established the Works Progress Administration by executive order to create jobs for the large numbers of unemployed laborers, as well as artists, musicians, actors, and writers. The Federal Arts Program, a sector of the Works Progress Administration, included the Federal Writers’ Project, one of the primary goals of which was to complete the America Guide series, a series of guidebooks for each state which included state history, art, architecture, music, literature, and points of interest to the major cities and tours throughout the state. Work on the Ohio Guide began in 1935 with the publication of several pamphlets and brochures. The Reorganization Act of 1939 consolidated the Works Progress Administration and other agencies into the Federal Works Administration, and the Federal Writers’ Project became the Federal Writers’ Project in Ohio. The final product was published in 1940 and went through several editions. The Ohio Guide Collection consists of 4,769 photographs collected for use in Ohio Guide and other publications of the Federal Writers’ Project in Ohio from 1935-1939. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: Handwritten on reverse: "McKinley Memorial - Canton, Ohio." The McKinley Monument is located at 800 Monument Drive NW, adjacent to Westlawn Cemetery. It is a large granite structure, partly resembling in its lines and setting the Taj Mahal of India and, to a lesser degree, the tomb of Hadrian. In the foreground is a lagoon, built in four sections, each one a few feet higher than the one below, and flanked on both sides by tree-shaded walks. The building is in the form of a large cylinder capped with two domes. One dome, which is fifty feet in diameter and seventy-five feet high, is known as the interior dome. The exterior dome is seventy-five feet in diameter and ninety-five feet high. Less than halfway up the steps is the bronze figure of McKinley, one hand in his trousers pocket, the other holding a sheaf of papers. The bodies of McKinley, his wife Ida Saxton McKinley, and two infant daughters rest within the mausoleum. Here are also many McKinley relics. The tomb is constantly decorated by wreaths and flowers sent by individuals and organizations from all over the country. To honor McKinley, schoolchildren from across the United States donated money to build the McKinley National Memorial in Canton. The McKinley Memorial Association, formed after the president's death, helped raise the funds. Harold Van Buren Magonigle designed the McKinley National Memorial. Construction began on the memorial in 1905. Workers used over two million bricks in the tomb's construction. President Theodore Roosevelt, who became president upon McKinley's death, dedicated the memorial on September 30, 1907. William McKinley, Jr., was president of the United States from March 1897 to September 1901. McKinley was born in Niles, Ohio, but he spent much of his life in Canton, Ohio. Leon Czolgosz assassinated McKinley at the Pan American Exposition in Buffalo, New York. McKinley died on September 14, 1901, eight days after being shot. The 8th Ohio Infantry Regiment was an Ohio National Guard regiment organized in July 1876 and mustered into federal service in May 1898 at Camp Bushnell in Columbus. Men in the regiment were from northern Ohio, predominantly Ashland, Holmes, Medina, Richland, Wayne, and Stark counties. The 8th Ohio was nicknamed "McKinley's Own" or "The President's Own" because three companies were from President William McKinley's hometown of Canton. The 8th Ohio assembled in Akron, Ohio, on April 26th, 1898, just three days after the call for troops. On July 4th, 1898, following several months of training at Camp Bushnell and Camp Alger, the 8th Ohio received orders to move to New York, where they would set sail for Cuba. The regiment disembarked at Siboney, Cuba on July 11. Although the unit never participated in combat, it was plagued by disease. Description: Four photographs document events in Canton, Ohio that marked the 50th anniversary of the death of President William McKinley. The anniversary was marked by the rededication of the McKinley Memorial and a parade. The parade followed the route taken by the McKinley funeral procession in 1901. Various industries were invited to participate in the parade. Among the floats was "Remember the Maine," sponsored by the Timken Roller Bearing Company. The final image shows the end of the parade at the memorial. The photographs measure between 2.5" x 6" (6.35 x 15.24 cm) and 5" x 8" (12.7 x 20.32 cm). William McKinley (1843-1901), the twenty-fifth president of the United States, was born in Niles, Ohio. He enlisted in the army at the outbreak of the Civil War and, after being mustered out, studied law and opened a law office in Canton, Ohio. McKinley served in the U.S. Congress for 14 years, and became president in 1897, largely due to the influence of Marcus Hanna, boss of the Cleveland political machine. McKinley was most noted for his foreign policy and the conduct of the Spanish-American War in 1898. It was during McKinley's administration that the U.S. acquired its first overseas possessions in the Philippines, Guam, and Puerto Rico. He was re-elected in 1900, but was assassinated by anarchist Leon Czolgosz in 1901. President McKinley was shot in Buffalo, New York on September 6th, died there on September 11th and was buried in Canton on September 19, 1901. His running mate, Theodore Roosevelt, then became president. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: Caption reads: "Foundations for new bridge on Turkey Foot Road near Massillon, Ohio." The town of Massillon, located along the Tuscarawas River in Stark County, was named in 1826 by landowner James Duncan after Jean Baptiste Massillon, the Court Preacher to Louis IV of France. The new town incorporated the town of Kendal, located in the northeast section of Massillon, which had been founded by Thomas Rotch in 1812. In 1853, Massillon was incorporated as a village. Massillon was known as the "wheat city" for many years, exporting wheat after the Ohio-Erie Canal opened in 1828. When the railroad came in 1852, industrial growth brought Pig-iron, glass, and coal mining industries. Another industry was developed by Joseph Davenport, the inventor, who founded the Massillon Bridge Company. Massillon became known for its steel and metal working activities and continues today in these areas. View on Ohio Memory.
